Pedestrian & Cyclist Facilities

On road cycling
As part of the upgrade, Great Eastern Highway (GEH) will ultimately comprise a west and east bound carriageway, each with three traffic lanes and a 1.5m wide on-road cycle lane. This on-road cycle lane extends for the length of the GEH upgrade i.e. 4.2 kilometres between Kooyong Road and Tonkin Highway.

Like the bus priority lanes, the on road cycle lanes will be coloured red to distinguish them from the carriageways. They will also be painted green at the approach and departure from intersections, in particular at conflict areas where left turning vehicles cross the cycle lane.

Footpaths

A 3 metre wide paved verge will be located along the west and east bound carriageways of the Great Eastern Highway for pedestrians. In addition to the crossings at the signalised intersections, pedestrians will be able to cross side road intersections and GEH via ‘cut throughs’ at the following locations:

• Armadale Road
• Hampden Street
• In front of Sandringham Village (east of Belmont Ave)
• At Severin Walk near Abernethy Road
• Hehir Street
• Daly Street
• Keymer Street
• Aurum Street
• Lyall Street

To tie-in with the urban design of Great Eastern Highway, the footpath will likely be constructed using various sizes and colours of hexagonal precast pavers and stone setts to provide clarity and enhance user safety through textural change. In-situ concrete footpaths are proposed between existing footpath and the pavers.
