Innovations
Throughout the project, City East Alliance will endeavour to support and encourage innovations that generally arise from project problem solving. During the early development stages of the project, more than 100 ideas from the Alliance staff were entered into an innovations register. These ideas ranged from incremental to radical innovations and focused on areas including technology, materials and delivery. The Alliance will continue to consider any ideas that may emerge throughout the delivery period, however the following are a snap shot of the innovations that are currently being further developed.
Recycled Asphalt Pavement
The Alliance proposes to use Recycled Asphalt Pavement (RAP) in various layers of the full depth asphalt pavement, demonstrating the Alliance’s commitment to sustainability. RAP has not previously been used for major projects in Western Australia and as such this would be a significant milestone for the State’s road construction industry.
Warm Mix Asphalt
CEA is investigating the use of a warm mix asphalt technology for the manufacture of asphalt for the pavement. This technology also embraces a sustainable approach by reducing energy consumption and the environmental impacts generated during manufacture.
Crushed Recycled Concrete
This initiative involves using crushed recycled concrete as road sub-base, that will maximise the re-use of materials and therefore minimise the environmental impacts associated with landfill and the quarrying of raw materials.
Traffic Management
As discussed in the Construction section of this website, the Alliance will also trial a number of new traffic management products and methods including:
• Attenuator units throughout the construction period to provide greater protection for our workers from the risk of oncoming traffic or errant vehicles. This has not been implemented in WA previously and will set a new industry benchmark; and
• Temporary speed humps in the traffic management of road works to increase the compliance of reduced speed zones and provide greater protection for workers.
Service Location Software
City East Alliance has developed a 3D model to develop a better understanding of the existing services and their relationship to the new proposed road works and to check clashes with utilities and other design elements.
The model will be used throughout construction to guide on-site activity and minimise the risk of damage to services. The model can also be used to export information to utility providers and asset owners.
