Design
The Alliance is working hard to finalise the project’s design prior to the commencement of major construction around September 2011. The design undergoes regular reviews by Main Roads, as well as independent road safety auditors, before it is approved for construction.
The project design is being developed to take account of the applicable standards, obvious physical limitations and technical issues, but also to address a developing set of stakeholder constraints and preferences, construction requirements and statutory obligations.
In order to produce the new design, CEA used survey data of the existing highway and connecting roads, drainage and services to create models of the upgrade. Design software modelled the road geometry and intersection design, as well as simulated traffic signal performance.
In addition to the road design, the Great Eastern Highway upgrade comprises the following components:
• Drainage
• Street lighting
• Pavement marking
• Signage
• Retaining walls
• Fencing
• Safety barriers
• Service relocation
• Intelligent Transport System (ITS)
• Public Artwork
• Landscaping
• Urban Design
All of these design components are developed in accordance with Main Roads’ and Australian standards. The Alliance also provides to Main Roads all of the drawings, reports and documentation necessary to maintain the upgrade.
