Current and Upcoming Changes
Great Eastern Highway Upgrade
Work to upgrade Great Eastern Highway (GEH) is progressing rapidly. As part of the project, City East Alliance (CEA) must carry out roadworks in preparation for an upcoming “traffic switch” onto part of the new eastbound carriageway.
Great Eastern Highway between Resolution Drive and Tonkin Highway
One and two day closures of side roads off the eastbound carriageway of GEH between Resolution Drive and Epsom Avenue are continuing as services are being relocated. In areas where this service work is complete, CEA is starting to prepare the area for road construction. Work is also progressively and intermittently taking place at each of the following intersections: Carbine Street, Kalgoorlie Street, Keymer Street, Aurum Street, Leake Street, Moreing Street and Lyall Street. These roads will be closed at the intersection of GEH intermittently over the coming weeks to allow the road pavement to be built up in layers.
Great Eastern Highway between Kooyong Road and Belmont Avenue
One and two day closures of intersections of side roads off the westbound carriageway of GEH between Kooyong Road and Belmont Avenue are being put in place over the coming weeks in order to install new underground services. Side roads such as Fitzroy Road, St Kilda Road, Acton Avenue and Hampden Road will be affected, with alternative routes signposted.
‘Traffic switch’ and intersection re-configuration
From 7pm Friday 25 May until 5am Monday 28 May, work will be carried out to re-configure the intersections of GEH and Hardey Road / Resolution Drive. This will mean access to/from GEH and these side streets will be unavailable, and alternative routes will need to be used. Following this weekend of work, this intersection will be in Stage 2 of construction.
Closure of right-turn into Lyall Street, travelling west
The existing right-turn into Lyall Street for westbound traffic has been removed, which is a permanent fixture as part of the Strategic Access Policy Plan developed by MRWA and the City of Belmont for safety reasons. Access to businesses and properties is still available. Where possible, CEA will provide the alternative route on the highway in the form of a U-turn at the Epsom Avenue traffic signals. Where this is not possible, the alternative route will be via Moreing Street, Victoria Street and Epsom Avenue signals to reach the eastbound carriageway of GEH.
Closure of right-turn into Lyall Street, travelling east
The existing right-turn into Lyall Street for eastbound traffic will soon be removed, which is a permanent fixture as part of the Strategic Access Policy Plan developed by MRWA and the City of Belmont for safety reasons. Access to businesses and properties will still be available via a U-turn opposite the Best Western hotel. Alternatively, traffic may turn right at the Epsom Avenue intersection.
Closure of right-turn opposite Grandstand Road (eastbound)
The existing right-turn into Muzz Buzz/Mane Liquor and Perth Rent-A-Car for eastbound traffic has been removed, which is a permanent fixture as part of the Strategic Access Policy Plan developed by MRWA and the City of Belmont for safety reasons. Access to these properties is still available via the westbound carriageway. Eastbound traffic can access the properties by taking Grandstand Road, Resolution Drive and turning back onto GEH at this intersection.
Abernethy Road intersection with Great Eastern Highway
As part of the recent traffic switch onto the new eastbound carriageway between Belmont Avenue and Hardey Road, the right-turn from the eastbound lane into Abernethy Road has been temporarily closed. This closure will remain in place for at least six months.
Grandstand Road intersection with Great Eastern Highway
As part of the recent traffic switch onto the new eastbound carriageway between Belmont Avenue and Hardey Road, the right-turn from the westbound lane into Grandstand Road has been permanently closed. As part of the final design, once project work is complete, there will be a u-turn and a right-turn available for westbound traffic at the Belgravia Street intersection.
Acton Avenue intersection with Great Eastern Highway
As part of the traffic switch onto the new eastbound carriageway between Brighton Road and Belmont Avenue, the right-turn from the eastbound lane into Acton Avenue has been temporarily closed. This closure will remain in place for at least six months. Alternative access is via Belmont Avenue.
Comprehensive signage will be placed in advance of changes advising the travelling public to use an alternative route.
