About the Project
Jointly funded by the State and Federal Governments, the $350 million Great Eastern Highway upgrade will ultimately see a 4.2 kilometre section of the route, between Kooyong Road and Tonkin Highway, widened from four to six lanes with a number of ancillary improvements.
In order to achieve this, a new eastbound carriageway will be constructed on the river side of the existing highway. A central median will also be constructed for the full length of the upgrade, increasing the highway’s efficiency and limiting the number of conflicting movements.
Understanding of the needs of local business, the project will upgrade major intersections to include dedicated turning movements, as well as provide U-turn facilities at key locations. This will ensure appropriate access to businesses and properties is maintained.
A key component of the project is the relocation of existing and installation of new utilities such as telecommunications, water, power and gas. In order to minimise disruption during the works, City East Alliance undertook a thorough service location survey prior to construction.
With a variety of geographical constraints and large number of directly affected land owners, the Great Eastern Highway upgrade is an extremely challenging project. The Alliance identified the major stakeholder concerns, including access, traffic and service relocation and is working with stakeholders to address and mitigate these issues where possible.
